Wacky Destinations

In November 2007, legislation was passed into Irish law allowing civil marriage ceremonies to be conducted in a wide variety of alternative locations around the country, once pre-approved by the Health Service Executive. Not only does this new law mean that you have a greater chance of getting married on the particular date you had set your heart on, it also means that you can exchange vows in any one of a myriad of unusual and visually appealing locations. With this in mind, we have put together some of our favourite knot-tying spots around the South East. So go on, be adventurous and look forward to a wedding with a difference.

Brownshill Dolmen, Carlow
Celebrate our Celtic heritage on the mysterious and majestic, Brownshill Dolmen in county Carlow. A place of worship and wonder for hundreds of years, what better place to exchange your vows than on an ancient hill with the stunning Carlow countryside as a backdrop for your photographs.

Nolan Park, Kilkenny
Whether you`re a Kilkenny Cat or simply a fan of the fastest field game on earth, getting married on the manicured grounds of Nolan Park in Kilkenny will be a magical moment to remember. To top it all off, as you say, I do, expect a cheer from the guests in the stands!

Rock of Cashel, Tipperary
This ancient seat of learning will add an air of spirituality and contemplation to proceedings, as the beautiful and ancient cathedral, perched on the Rock of Cashel provides a statuesque and vivid reminder of times past. With spectacular views over the Golden Vale, this is a breathtaking venue, that anyone will find inspiring.

Tramore, Waterford
If you`re a marine fan, love swimming, or simply want to do something unusual on your wedding day, why not say a chilly I do before diving into the icy Celtic sea. After your refreshing swim, stroll down to Tramore and dine in the Sands hotel, or hop on the amusements for a fun filled end to a fun filled albeit crazy wedding.

Dunbrody Heritage Ship, New Ross, Wexford
If you want to go nautical, this is one to consider: Step aboard The Dunbrody Famine Ship, a full-scale replica of the original ship built in 1848, and you will be enthralled and enchanted by actors in costume and character - an entertaining day, to say the least!

Wicklow Mountains
Could there be a more romantic place in Ireland than the beautiful little church at Glendalough in county Wicklow? If you enjoy hiking, a trek up to this spectacular spot could be the perfect start to your wedding day. Take in the breathtaking scenery as you exchange vows, and celebrate with a reception in the nearby Powerscourt House. Just leave the three-inch heels until you`re back down the mountain and in the hotel!
Jameson Heritage Centre, Cork

Step inside and be transported to a different era, 100 years ago in the Jameson Brewery in Midleton, East Cork. With old documents, photos and vintage bottles of the good stuff, it`s all you need for an enjoyable wedding day and if you`re sticking with tradition, you`ll only have to find something new, borrowed, and blue!
